  • I Know It's Hard

    "I'm Ready To Die, Even If I Was Barely Able To Live."



    On the twenty third of November, Heather Rye went through a long and painful birth which ended with an emergency c-section. It was at that moment that a beautiful baby girl was introduced into the world. Light, fluffy ginger hair, freckles dotting her cheeks and nose, and when she would grow up her accent would match her family's English one.

    She was perfect.

    Or so the Rye's thought.

    She was named Sarah. Her mother admired her so much, and she was dressed in the most beautiful baby dresses and accessories, earning countless compliments from passers bys when she was out in her pink pram. Everything was pink, pink and pink. Everything was cute, cute and cute. Everything was girly, girl and girly.
    But Sarah felt weird.

    She started feeling that way by the age of four, even dressing up as a knight for Halloween multiple years afterwards. She preferred to dress in casual clothes and go hang out with boys. She wasn't too keen on sports through, which always reassured her mother. But even her sister, Viola, could tell that there was something off. Sarah wasn't a tomboy. Sarah was... a boy.

    This carried on until Sarah was twelve. Viola left home, she moved out and went off to university, and the siblings tried to keep in touch, but they soon fell out of it within months, and then Heather was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, dying a sudden death six months after Sarah turned thirteen.

    By then, Sarah had cut her hair like a boys, and could easily be mistaken for one if it wasn't for her feminine voice. She wasn't very shaken by her mothers death, but it did still hit hard, even thought the woman wasn't very supportive of her daughter. She hadn't acknowledged the girls opinion, but if she had, maybe Sarah might have reconsidered. But, when she turned fourteen, Sarah came out as transgender to her school, which made her life ten times worse.

    People started purposely using the wrong pronouns, and they'd trip her up in the corridors, slam her into lockers and throw her in the males bathroom. They would best her up outside of school, but since her father, Fraser, had been an alcoholic since she was born, she got no support, and merely more abuse from the father at home for being late or returning home with ripped clothing.

    But no matter what happened, she stayed positive. She was sure that there would be a light at the end of the tunnel, as she knew shed done nothing to deserve any of the abuse she was recovering. So, she just kept hoping, and life seemed to get a little bit better when her father committed suicide and she was packed off to her grandma Catherine's, as she started dealing with the school bullying, but only because she didn't know the reason. She was a heavy transphobic, so when she finally found out about Sarah, she started acting like she didn't exist. But the child was used to that.

    Life seemed slightly better as the bullying slowed down to mainly whispers and occasional beatings, which the child was glad about, but when at the age of fifteen she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Esophageal Cancer, people were sure she'd realise that her life was just shit. But, no, she remained positive. Even when her three treatments failed.

    But by the second treatment, she became a he.
    Because he had turned sixteen, the legal age for testosterone in Britain.

    Sarah's gender therapist immediately approved, and she started almost instantly, and she felt a million times better finally becoming the boy shed always wanted to be.

    So, she changed her name to Asher, and then she was a he.

    Top surgery soon followed, and Asher was finally happy with his life, even though he'd just received the news from the hospital that he wouldn't live past his late twenties, and would surely die before he hit at most, 27. But it was okay, because he was happy, so the underweightness, the hate and the dying became minuscule. He. Was. Happy. And finding his homosexuality only made matters better.

    With his newly found identity, Asher was finally ready to live, even if it was only for less than eight years.

    He was finally ready to live. Ready to live the life that was dying.

    Now at the age of nineteen, Asher lives with his sister Viola, who picked up contact once again with him after his third treatment, in her small apartment on the outskirts of London. The pair are very close, but Viola is barely home, basically making the apartment Asher's own. He tries to get along with the part time cashier job he has, but with his Stage 3 cancer, things are plummeting hard.

    He's not got long to go.
    "Hard work pays off. It's alright, it's alright. It was worth it, and it always will be."
